Having lived all my
life just a stones throw from Goodwood
racecourse, and having a mum who owns and rides
horses and a dad who works in the racing industry,
it was inevitable that I was going to develop a strong
passion for the "sport of kings". The first race I
can remember betting in was the Stewards Cup in 1990
when I had £5 on the winner Knight of Mercy at the
odds of 14/1. Ever since that day I have had a special
affinity with sprint racing and with the Stewards Cup in
particular. There is no greater spectacle than
seeing 30 horses charge down the six furlong
straight at one of the most beautiful racecourses in
the world and I make a habit of going to see the
race every year.

Gambling on horses
is an exact science to me and I spend many hours
studying the form books and checking out the latest
news in the various racing publications and
websites. I chose to specialise in sprint racing
because, in my opinion, the horses run truer to form
over the shorter distances as they generally have to
run flat out and tactics play a lesser role. I
only concentrate on 3yo+ sprint handicaps where the
horses tend to have strong form lines - conversely I avoid 2yo, 3yo,
listed, group, claimer and banded sprints where the
place odds are not so appealing. I take
every known factor into consideration when I choose
my selections including; horse form, handicap rating,
trainer form, jockey form, price, course, going,
distance, seasonal form, course form, race trends, draw, class of
race, weather forecast, archived video footage and
future entries etc. Once I have chosen my selection I shop
around for the best early price, place my bet and
then wait in anticipation for the start of the race,
hoping that my horse will get a good break and have
luck in running - two of the most important factors in a sprint
race.
